Dahlgren Dialogue: A Path Forward on the Sexual Abuse Crisis
The Church is wounded by the evil of clerical sexual abuse and broken trust from lack of accountability. In a context of prayer, reflection, and conversation, this Dahlgren Dialogue will offer an opportunity to face this evil and its moral costs and to examine what has been done—and needs to be done—to protect, restore, and renew our family of faith.
This Dialogue will include a leader of the Church’s past efforts to protect young people, a Jesuit psychologist who has helped religious communities address this challenge, a lay leader who has dedicated herself to improving the best practices and management in the Catholic Church, and a student leader from the Georgetown Catholic community.
This Dahlgren dialogue will examine the moral, spiritual, and institutional dimensions of this crisis and the causes and consequences of broken trust. The conversation will also focus on what has been done and must be done to protect the vulnerable, hold leaders accountable, and begin to reform, renew, and heal the church. We especially want to uncover what went right and what went wrong since the 2002 Charter for the Protection of Children was signed by the US Bishops, and how we might strengthen our resolve to force change upon the episcopal culture that inhibits its implementation. This unique sharing of analysis, hurt, and hope will take place in Dahlgren Chapel, the spiritual center of Georgetown, in a context of prayer, reflection, and respectful dialogue.
The Dahlgren Dialogue Series:
The Dahlgren Dialogues are a series of substantive conversations with experienced leaders in relevant fields on current topics at the intersection of faith and public life. Co-sponsored with the Georgetown Office of Mission and Ministry, these are held in the Dahlgren Chapel of the Sacred Heart in the context of prayer and reflection. The community can gather in prayerful reflection while listening to respected religious leaders, scholars, policymakers, and other experts on some of the most pressing moral and political issues of our time.
