Title: Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists' Disposal Practices of Recyclable Solid Waste in the Operating Room: An Exploration of Practice.

In the past 30 years the exorbitant amount of generated hospital waste has turned into a significant environmental and financial problem in the U.S. Recycling programs benefit hospitals by decreasing greenhouse gas emissions as well as offer financial cost savings to hospital waste management departments.

This study was conducted using an exploratory, descriptive quantitative research design to explore Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) disposal practices of recyclable waste in operating rooms and barriers to recycling in operating rooms. A sample of 293 randomly selected CRNAs active in the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists were surveyed and responses were analyzed. The study found a statistically significant association between having recycling amenities in the operating room and CRNA recycling practices, (p<0.001). However, the study found limited recycling amenities available for CRNA use in operating rooms. The majority of respondents indicated they would recycle if proper amenities were available in their operating rooms.
