From Locker Room Comments to Online Abuse: A Conversation about Speech, Violence and Culture
Georgetown students report that less then 1/4 of sexual assault survivors of unwanted penetration reported to a campus program. 68.4% of those survivors did not think it was “serious enough” to report. Our students stories matter and they connect to a larger conversation that we are exploring in real time on social media.
From comments about locker rooms, rape culture, sports culture and online harassment, the national dialogue on sexual assault is front and center. Our conversation has spilled into online spaces as we pursue discussion on what is free speech and what is harassment and violence. Moderated by author and anti-violence expert Soraya Chemaly (C'88) we are pleased to welcome Jessica Luther author of Unsportsmanlike Conduct: College Football and the Politics of Rape, Dave Zirin journalist from The Nation, and Bonnie Morris author and Georgetown University Women's and Gender Studies Faculty to share their perspectives about online speech, sports culture and issues of violence.
