Angel Gil-Ordóñez, Music Director

The First Step Of the Journey is an excerpt from a new composition by composer and Visiting Associate Professor Joel Phillip Friedman expressly written for the students of the Georgetown University Orchestra. The commission was the idea of the orchestra’s Music Director and conductor Maestro Angel Gil-Ordonez, who asked Joel to write with these elements in mind: a challenging, yet accessible piece for Georgetown students; the performance would be held in a non-traditional space, Walsh Gallery; and that there be a connection to opening of artist Benoy Behl’s “Buddhist Heritage Sites” photography exhibition in the Spagnuolo Art Gallery.  What to expect?  Two enthusiastic short performances by the students, deployed around Walsh Gallery, punctuated by a full explanation of the work’s programmatic meaning offered by the composer between the two hearings!

Composer Joel Phillip Friedman’s natural creative impulse is to work across genres, and to compose music that is equally informed by his classical training and his engagement with the vernacular.  His varied portfolio includes work for small and large ensembles, musical theater, opera, dance, film, jazz, and rock.  Joel’s music has been performed by artists and ensembles including: Paul Neubauer, viola; Susan Narucki, soprano; pianists Alan Feinberg and Stephen Gosling; cellists Joshua Roman and Fred Sherry; Speculum Musicae, the National Orchestral Association, and the New York Chamber Ensemble.  It has been heard in venues from Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center, to theaters Off-Broadway and the London West End. His film score for the supernatural thriller independent feature Red Ice was screened at multiple festivals. Recent projects include: a consortium commission from the San Jose Chamber Orchestra, Takoma Ensemble, and String Orchestra of New York City, a series of three pieces for the 2013 Irving M. Klein International String Competition, and Fallings, an experimental chamber music theater piece.
