The Next Wave Jazz Ensemble, one of the Navy?s two premier big bands, returns to campus for a shared concert with the GU Jazz Ensemble. The 17-member Next Wave, under the leadership of Chief Musician Joe McCarthy on drums, will perform a program including two new commissions written for the band by jazz composers Jim McNeely and Vince Norman. The Next Wave has performed around the country and been featured locally at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Sylvan Theater, Smithsonian Sculpture Garden, and Blues Alley. The Georgetown University Jazz Ensemble, which focuses on the historical big band sounds of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Stan Kenton and other great bands from the 1930s to the present, will perform works by Maynard Ferguson, Sammy Nestico, and Michael Philip Mossman.
