The Bald Soprano
By Eugène Ionesco
Directed by Robert Duffley (COL ?13)
Produced by Natalie Gallagher (COL ?13)
An English tea party unravels at its own tweedy seams in Ionesco?s The Bald Soprano. The Smiths, a middle-class couple who appreciate life?s sturdy pleasures, invite their strikingly similar friends the Martins over for a quiet evening. The visit descends into chaos, however, as their guests, their maid, and finally the town fireman all arrive with increasingly impolite contributions to the evening?s conversation. Originally titled L?anglais sans peine, the play spoofs the cookie-cutter phrases which pass as human interaction. At its premiere in 1950, the work shocked audiences and quickly came to be regarded as a cornerstone of Theater of the Absurd; sixty years later, Ionesco still challenges audiences.
