Physics Colloquium: Looking at industrial physics through optical windows

Advanced Optics serves diverse markets including Aerospace and Defense, Astronomy, Telecommunications, Displays, Semiconductors, Medical and more. Several recently completed  projects are selected to demonstrate how fundamental understanding as well as academe–industry cooperation overcome technical challenges and promote new product development. Low scatter and damage resistant optics allow sensing and protecting for Aerospace and Defense. Gorilla glass along with surface modification enables touch-sensing and enhances surface functionality as well as device durability for displays. Excimer laser optics brightens smart electronic devices. A wide field multi-channel fluorescence imager system delivers complete genome sequence data for medical studies. Therefore, as the APS defines Industrial Physics – “Physicists in industry have made possible the technological advances of modern products that make our lives safer, better, and easier.”
