Physics Colloquium: From Stern-Gerlach experiment to pure spin current, the unending saga of spin
Prof. Chia-Ling Chien, Johns Hopkins University
The Stern-Gerlach experiment in 1922 inadvertently revealed electron spin. However, spintronics was not launched until 1988 after Fert and Grünberg made the seminal discoveries. Equally remarkable, after so many important advances have already been made in three decades, new phenomena continue to emerge unabated. We discuss some of the recent development in pure spin current phenomena, spin orbit torque, and antiferromagnetic spintronics.
