She Kills Monsters
Written by Qui Nguyen
Directed by Zack Rettig (SFS '19)
Produced by Morgan Doyle (COL ’19)
Taking place in 1990’s suburban Ohio, Qui Nguyen’s play She Kills Monsters follows the story of Agnes Evans as she mourns the loss of her parents and younger sister, Tilly, in a tragic accident. While Agnes is searching through her late sister’s personal items, she discovers Tilly’s Dungeons and Dragons notebook. Through its pages, Agnes enters an imaginary world of high fantasy, and gains unexpected insight into a side of Tilly she had never taken the time to understand. In addition to engaging with the subjects of family and loss, She Kills Monsters also explores the ideas of personal identity and self-expression within the often-suffocating confines of suburban life on a journey packed with action, adventure, and sharp wit. Like a flower blossoming from a neighborhood sidewalk, Nguyen’s work reminds us that within every person is something unique and beautiful, yearning to bloom even in the drabbest of circumstances.
