Mysticism in the Ordinary: The Call of Meditation in a Distracted Age
Georgetown University’s John Main Center for Meditation and Inter-Religious Dialogue University will host the Spring 2019 John Main Lecture on Tuesday, March 19th from 7:00pm to 8:30pm in the Georgetown University Library. Our guest speaker, Dr. Mark Burrows, a Professor of Theology and Literature, will offer the lecture: Mysticism in the Ordinary – The Call of Meditation in a Distracted Age.
How does a contemplative practice help to open us to wonder, in the face of what is “ordinary” in our lives? How do we find our "center" in the midst of a divided culture and in a distracted age like ours? This talk explores such foundational questions, drawing on ancient and modern sources that invite our engagement at the deep level of our subconscious, where meditation does its work.
Mark S. Burrows is a theologian, poet, and translator, working at the intersection of the poetic and the mystical. A long-time resident of New England, he currently divides his time between Bochum, Germany, where he teaches theology and literature at the Protestant University of Applied Sciences, and Camden, Maine. His recent publications include Meister Eckhart’s Book of the Heart. Meditations for the Restless Soul, with Jon M. Sweeney (2017) and The Chance of Home: Poems (2018); his Meister Eckhart’s Book of Secrets: Meditations on Letting Go and Finding True Freedom, also with Jon M. Sweeney, will appear in 2019. He has translated several volumes of German poetry in English, including Rainer Maria Rilke’s Prayers of a Young Poet (2016) and the Iranian-German poet SAID’s 99 psalms. He is the recipient of the Witter Bynner Prize in Poetry and a member of the Bochumer Literaten, a circle of professional writers living and working in the Ruhr Region. Current projects include a new translation of Rilke’s Sonnets to Orpheus and an accompanying volume exploring this visionary work, Under Orpheus’ Spell.
