Diverse Leadership: Why It Matters

Over the last several weeks, Americans have witnessed the disproportionate impact COVID-19 has on communities of color. This global pandemic is just the latest example of public policy challenges—from health care, to climate change, to affordable housing, and access to education—that are exacerbated by racial and socioeconomic disparities, raising questions about how to adequately serve these populations during times of crisis, and sparking conversations about the need for more diversity in public service.

Join the Institute of Politics and Public Service at Georgetown’s McCourt School of Public Policy (GU Politics) for a conversation with U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) about the critical role diverse leadership plays in creating equitable public policy.

As a leader fighting to combat issues disproportionately affecting communities of color, Senator Cortez Masto will discuss policy challenges facing vulnerable communities, and what leaders can do to create positive change. Drawing on her experience as the first Latina ever elected to the United States Senate—and the first female from Nevada—Cortez Masto will also share what she has learned about the importance of diverse leadership.

Moderated by GU Politics Executive Director Mo Elleithee and featuring live Q&A with students from across the country, this GU Politics Virtual Forum conversation with Senator Cortez Masto will take place on Thursday, May 28 at 6:30 PM EDT and will be streamed live across GU Politics’ social media channels (FacebookYoutube, and Twitter).
